A day to day acount of the whacky and wonderful world of Muggaz - i tend to be having too much fun these days, and often cannot remember moments due to debauchery - its time the internet repayed my loyalty by recording my antics.
Need Input!
Published on March 9, 2004 By Muggaz In Blogging
I personally don't know too much about Blogging. JU is my first experience, but i may be out of line, so seasoned veterans, i would really appreciate your input here, and i am sure its not just me as well.

I am just wondering what consensus is for commenting on other authors blogs. As JU grows and grows, and the users dont become as familiar as perhaps some people around here, i can sometimes be a little afraid to comment on other peoples blogs.

Its pretty safe to say, that i wont comment on someone elses Blog unless they have commented on mine, this is my personal viewpoint, and i am wondering if it is an un-written law? Sometimes i am inspired to make a passing comment, but in all honesty, i wont even read new material by a new user unless the title is catchy.

As soon as a new user comments on any of my blogs, i will make an effort to check out their articles, and see where this person is coming from.

At the end of the day, this is about exposure, and i know that Brad & Co. are working in the points system so that forum type articles dont get rediculous amounts of points just because people are leaving comments, and i agree with this 100% This will ensure the best authors and people with interesting opinions remain in the top 10, rather than post whores who often say things just for the sake of 5 points.

However, My blog is no sacred place, and i welcome comments from everyone... not for the points, i dont care for them because i have been labeled an elitist by some n00bs... i just want to let those guys know that they are joining a community, and for people to read/comment on your blog in a consistent fashion, it can be a lot of work to start of with to get the main players interested.

I immensely enjoy new users comming into the fold, but i am getting tired of them refering to the top 10 as elitists snobs who dont give new blogs the time of day - just realise, you scratch our back, and impress us with insiteful comments, and let us know you are reading us, i can ensure you that we will give your Blog the time of day it deserves.

Happy Blogging and BAM!!!

Some blogs are hard to comment on, because I don't understand them. I honestly don't choose a blog just because a person I know wrote it, but because of the title.

I don't really care who writes an article most of the time, if it's a good article, I'll comment on it. Also, if the article is *really* good, then I'll continue to follow that blogger's writings; though most of the time, I'll just take a look at the featured articles, or the "Recent Articles" which have promising titles.

I'm not so sure that commenting on an article just because that person has commented on yours is an "unwritten rule" though. I like to give every blogger attention, whether it be a "big name" in the community, or a complete newcomer. I just think things are "more fair" that way.

Interesting article though, nice work.

I find some blogs hard to comment on too....sometimes because I don't understand them (no matter how hard I try), sometimes because I have nothing nice to say so I prefer to keep my trap shut...and sometimes because I'm a little intimidated by the blogger who's written it and would prefer not to incur their wrath, so to speak.

Examples of the latter are getting fewer and farther between. The people I was truly intimidated by aren't posting that much anymore, and the ones I thought I was intimidated by are looking less and less cerebral and threatening and more and more pretentious.

I always like reading yours though, Muggaz. You're neither intimidating or pretentious, but always genuine and more often than not thought provoking - and of course funny!

I certainly agree with what you are saying in regards to comments guys, allthough sometimes i can't think of much to say, i like to leave comments to let the author know i am reading, but its risky to appear points hungry rather than friendly!

You know, if everyone thought the way you do, nothing would ever get done.

Your notion of "You srcatch my back, I'll scratch yours" shines through your writing consistantly.

You advised Imajinit not to call some chick; if she really liked him she would call him.

Now you're saying you don't go to anyone's blog unless they go to yours first.

Don't you see that if everyone thought "I'll wait until THEY make the first move", no one would ever be loved?

Let that marinate.

if you want to make a comment, make a comment. i just go by featured articles, recent, and whatever looks interesting. i don't really follow indivdual bloggers unless their article is really offensive. that way i know to avoid them in the future..

Besides, if they dont like your comments they can just blacklist you

Hehe.. read my article Trin... If the title is provoking, i will read it, no matter who it is by! I just know for a fact hat some people dont like comments! and people are calling us elitists and are expecting us to read their blogs... I dont want to name names by providing links, but i know for a fact you have seen some of these articles....

I find that attitude hard to accept when i am anything but an elitist - sure, i wont read crap writing, but i wont hold anything against anyone just because they have been here for less time than me...

Yeah, what Trinitie and JeremyG said. They got to my comments first.

I read pretty much everything, and demonstrate approval by commenting. People do actually get ticked off at me a lot- now that I think about it- but it usually blows over because we're all pretty reasonable people.

Sometimes I would like to comment on more blogs.

I browse around to read a few of them. Some of the blogs may be worthy of comment, but are too hard to read. I get bored by the time I get to the point of some of the blogs that are written by athors who consider themselves "eloquent."

Long paragraphs, long sentences, stuff like that. Booo-oring!

Brad W is one of the few frequent contributers to this weblog who is able to "walk the line" by writing compelling arguments which don't wear-out the reader.

That's why your blog is popular Muggaz. It is user-friendly too.

I think this will be an excellent concept when the featured articles are the best ones, not chosen by the admin... at the moment you only get to see what Brad thinks you should see!!!

I typically leave comments to those whom I read regularly and don't often think about the points issue in that regard. I generally get a handful of regulars who comment on my stuff, because I guess, they appreciate what I write, and the fact that I take the time to let them know that I am interested in what they are saying as well. I like receiving responses from people outside of that regular circle... to a point. There are some that just post inane stuff that takes away from good discussion, but I suppose that comes with the terrritory. I wish people would set their own custom list of bloggers/blogs, though. The people that I do like to read, often don't have a list of whom they like to read. It's impossible to check out every single user's blog, but with people whom I share interests with, they may have discovered something that I've missed.

I too go over the forum lists, as here, and post comments without regard to author. Dedalus is pretty intense and I do tend to look at his works more seriously. Wise Fawn is a friend and I like her ability to diffuse arguments when she chooses. Brad and I go back to the early days - what; three months ago? - and I love get a dig at him occassionally. Otherwise I have little regard for the author, only the information (though I clicked on yours knowing you already).
I was once at number two here and am actually very glad to be sliding down the list now. I am no longer in the rat race of competing to get my name known and feel more at ease. I look forward to the time I am unknown and can just be a blogger again. I see some relationships forming in some older names, and that is cool to watch happen. Some may soon be logging on from the same seat and terminal soon.
Overall, unless there is a political agenda of sorts, designed to censor adverse opinions, people like to read comments and are appreciative knowing their thoughts count enough to merit reply. (I've even gone out of my way to give a reply to new blogs who have said they wish they'd get a reply.) I do, and so hope you will also give everyone a reply when so moved without regard to whether or not you know of them already. It's not dis-courteous at all, and not ALL n00bs feel that way - probably very few do.

More often than not I find it really hard to post a meaningful comment to someone's article. Some articles are difficult to relate to, some are not comment-friendly (a lot of mine aren't, I mean they're about everyday life, what are you supposed to comment on there?). Most of time time I comment on the blogs of people I've become friends with or if the article is of particular interest to me. I suppose the common theme to all of our replies here is that we comment on: 1) friends' blogs 2) stuff that interests us.
