Red tape stalls everyone

It’s a sad day for the world community. It seems as though no matter how interested anyone is in progression, there is always some staunch conservative individual or organisation willing to stall.

I am talking about the Californian Supreme Courts decision to annul almost 4000 same sex marriages. This decision has come at a provocative time in Australia, as out Gay and Lesbian community prepare for weekend rallies in the capital cities of Australia.

The court said the city illegally issued the certificates and performed the ceremonies, since Californian state law defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Anti-Gay marriage groups have had the last laugh at the Mayor of San-Francisco – Gavin Newsom, indicating he was too brash, and that he has only harmed the gay movement’s chances at a recognised legal union between same sex individuals.

While I understand that ultimately, these marriages were void because of State Law, forward thinking men like Gavin Newsom have opened the door to possibly assess and revise state constitutional law. As far as I am concerned, there is more social damage to be done by treating homosexuals as deviants and not honouring them a basic human right of legal matrimony.

America is the world leader in so many fields, and we would like to think that basic human rights are one of those fields. Australia’s federal government is always watching in the shadows for outcomes of situations like this, and it’s unfortunate our archaic prime-minister will have a grin on his face, as he is staunchly opposed to same sex marriages.

Back to the drawing board for the progressive thinkers – this is going to be a long and drawn out legal battle, and we can only hope the sanctity of human integrity is preserved.

Great post. Although it is likely to attract controversy and more of the usual about homosexuality, your article is a thoughtful and well written look at the current situation. I say, Rock on Muggaz!

That's the thing... What is the point of all this controversy? Homosexuality is here to stay, and treating them like sub-humans is only detrimental to society as a whole, not just friends of Dorothy...

Rock on Muggaz!

Don't worry, I plan on it Thanks for your comments

Actually, the anti-gay groups may not have had the last laugh, as this represents 4000 "challenges" to the state's definition of marriage law. Now that it is in the courts, it can proceed up the appellate process, where the decision may well be overturned.
