A day to day acount of the whacky and wonderful world of Muggaz - i tend to be having too much fun these days, and often cannot remember moments due to debauchery - its time the internet repayed my loyalty by recording my antics.
Where are we coming from? Where do we want to go?
Published on May 4, 2004 By Muggaz In Blogging
I sat at work today, talking with my friends located in various offices all over Melbourne, and other friend’s from office’s around Australia… I even spoke to friends who are located overseas – all thanks to the information age, because I live in 2004 instead of 1904.

We banter about what we are doing on the weekend, what we are getting mum for mothers day, or who is winning the footy… how trivial this all seems, and it got me thinking, what did 22 year old guys do for fun in 1904? How did they socialise? Would I be able to survive? Do I take my life of fun for granted?

The average age expectancy was 47 years old. Today it is almost 80… If I was born in 1904 I probably never would have met many aunties or uncles, definitely not my grandparents… If I was born in 1904, I wouldn’t know much at all about 1804. Knowledge is power, and knowledge was not freely available as we enjoy it today.

The kids of 1904 couldn’t even enjoy a Dr. Suess book – for this is when he was born. The infancy death rate would have been something we can only read about today.

100 years ago, 22 year old guys were married with kids. If they were lucky enough, they were working away in a factory, encouraging the development of steel and metal. If they weren’t lucky… they had probably died of some incurable disease, possibly influenza, or what we now know as the ‘common cold.’ There were no health insurance or government subsidies in 1904, we get a lot of help – do we appreciate it?

Just today I walked to a pharmacy – or a ‘drug store’ and purchased some cold & flu tablets over the counter for $10.00. It’s an everyday thing, going to the store and purchasing whatever your heart desires… did you go to the store today? What did you buy? And how much work did you have to do to afford it? Did you buy an ice-cream in a cone? The ice cream cone was invented in 1904….

The United States purchased the Panama Canal control zone for $10,000,000US in 1904. In 2004 $10,000,000US would buy me maybe 40 McLaren F1 roadsters – and coming across that kind of money is not an inconceivable idea for the ambitious. Bill Gates could have bought the whole world many times over.

We note our world environment toady as a hostile one, but the world has never known the peace of today. Russia and Japan were at war in 1904, most of Africa and some of South America was at war, and there were still more to come, no matter where you reside in 1904 – a soldier was a viable career option. I would not consider it in 2004.

As I talk to my friends over email today, do I realise how lucky I am to live in today’s day and age? You bet I certainly do. I do worry about 2104 though – what kind of life can my children expect? What kind of position will we leave them in?

To live a better life today, and assist you on your path to fulfilment, you need to take these retrospective views on what people went through before you. Be thankful for everything you have, and realise there is going to be people after you as well.

Respect is the key word here. Have respect for yourself. Respect for your surroundings, respect for people’s heritage, and respect for where you are going. Respect for what your forefathers have done, and respect for what you are doing.

I think Jimmy Buffet said it best when he said:

"Why don't we get drunk, and screw?"

j/k mate... deep thinking there dude!  you didn't hurt anything did ya?

on May 04, 2004
Very deep ..OMG you made me think.

Really interesting reading !!

I agree with worrying about what kind of world we are creating for our kids too.

I guess we have to pay a high price for the benefits we have now ...I just hope it's not too high.

Yes RESPECT

Life was definitely harder in the past, but those who live in Africa probably have it worse now than Aussies, Europeans, and Americans had it them.

Well written article.

Thanks Sherye,

You know, I thought that as i clicked on the submit button... Those in Africa have same difficulties obtaining miscelaneous items we take for granted, and you are right, the water they drink, should they get it, is probably worse than it would have been in 1904 because of our progression... the pollution of waterways and such... the terrible infancy mortality rates, the spread of disease...

but thats a whole nother article...

Mack - thanks for the price update! you shopping for one are you mate?

MJ - thinking is what I do best! as I never stop and am forever practicing! I am sure they still got drunk and screwed in 1904 as well... and hopefully, if all goes to plan, they will still be doing it in 2104

Thanks for your comments!

great article!
I was with a couple of girlfriends and my sister, and we had just seen a movie set around the early 1900s. One of the girls, who had admired the dresses and design and style of the movie pretty much sighed and asked 'wouldn't you love it if you were living then?'
My sister and I looked at her in horror... nice life for the white girls in our group but for the two ojibway indians? It really made her stop and think about how certain people benefited during specific time periods and how others would have suffered greatly. 2100s? I wonder if I would take the chance if it was possible to look ahead into the future. I could be the last Anishnaabe-kwe standing... or we could have total control... hehehe.

I think along those lines every time I hear someone complaining about the way we have it now.  How we never have any time for anything anymore.  We have just gotten spoiled.  I complain about laundry yet every day I thank my lucky stars for my washer and drier!  People used to work from sun up to sun down.  Vacation, what was that?  We have it good now that is for sure.

I am also with you on appreciating the ability to communicate so readily with people everywhere and anywhere.  If people use the knowledge that is now available wisely, we should be okay in the 2100s.  That is a big if though.

Good article.

Totally... sweet article mate. Well researched and interesting.

For me to appreciate where I am, I don't even have to think much about what others have done before me (although I appreciate it). I just have to think about what I have been through in the last 7 years and realise that I am so much better of that I'd be stupid to be whinging about whatever trivial predicament I was in. Sure, shit happens, but in comparison to 'stuff'... it aint nothin' but a chicken wing.

Hope you had a good long weekend

Wow... thanks for all of your comments guys... I knew this article would be well received, because it is relevant to everyone... and I like to do my part to make people think!!!

I cant change the way people think, but I can at least get them thinking, and that is a start, and this is the most peaceful way I can get my point that I think what some people are doing - on personal and internetaional levels shows absolutely no respect at all...

Theophilus... we didn't get the long weekend in Melbourne mate

Wow that was a really good article! It is amazing how far we have come along, I can't help but think that currently we are doing more damage than good for generations to come! Thanks for making me think though

Muggz, don't worry about getting featured. This was a profoundly insightful article, and I ticked the little box to make it so. You have so many people who come to read your shit (and that's "Good shit!") that you are a feature in and of yourself. Amazing what a couple of sick days can do to clean out the 'ol noodle, eh?
