Also - does anyone else find it odd that USA has 13 medals and yet they're in 4th place behind Japan who only has 7medals but they have more Gold then the USA?
Nope - not odd at all... Gold is paramount.... you can have 1 gold medal, no silvers and no bronze, and you will still be ranked higher than a country with 30 silver and 60 bronze... Gold is GREAT!!!!

Muggaz, it must have been my lame dial up connection last night giving me the problems because today, on my work computer, I can see the table just fine. Thanks for posting this. I think it's great info!
Why is the American baseball team missing from the Olympics? They failed to beat Mexico in the Qualifiers
How crazy is that?!?!?!?! I was wondering the same thing and found a story on it at Yahoo. What's even crazier is that they are the reigning gold medalists from the 2000 games and there was no automatic berth but Greece as the host country got an automatic berth into the 8 team bracket (in 2000 it was 12 teams). Even worse, the Greek team came to the states to recruit athletes of Greek parents to come play for their team (prior to construction for the Olympics, Greece had a grand total of two baseball fields in the entire country - left over on the remains of two US bases that had been closed years earlier). And, digging even lower, two of those 'borrowed ringers' tested positive for banned substances... man, what a tangled web... Sour grapes all around on this one...
Also - does anyone else find it odd that USA has 13 medals and yet they're in 4th place behind Japan who only has 7medals but they have more Gold then the USA?
It just depends on the site that reports the scores and how they want to do it. Some places are going by medal count, this one is going by gold medal count.

Right now it shows the US ahead in overall medal count and tied with ozzie and japan for second in terms of Gold. I'm kind of worried about the States this year. With all the drug scandals and a craptacular basketball team, I think we are starting to lose some edge but it's still very early and athletics haven't even started. And one of my biggest pet peeves is people who use medals per capita. I think its just silly. Just win the stinkin medals!

Our basketball team is poised to be a national embarassment.
"Word" to AI: you might want to stick around in Athens to see if any European leagues want to take you; if you can't play a golden game, you might not WANT to head back to the US.

Just think... had Thorpie touched just a bit faster, that table would look a WHOLE lot different!
Still, damn good effort from the Aussies...

Speaking of Thorpe - What a spectacular effort in the 100m -- Bronze -- He's the most successful Australian swimmer in history now - he's got one more medal then Dawn Fraser and Susie O'Neil and he's still got the relay to go
It's not even his event and he got a Bronze - I think he was happier to get that Bronze then he was when he won Gold a few days ago.
Keiren Perkins said that it's the first medal Australia's gotten in that event in 20years - and noone has got a medal in all three 100, 200 and 400 - That's amazing - Go Thorpie
Hey - We were talking about this this morning -- what year was that amazing Perkins swim - you know the one when he was like 2 laps ahead of the other 7 swimmers? And he smashed the world record - Was it 1996?

Was it 1996?
He was written off at the Atlanta olympics... no one thought he would win because he entered the Olympics on the back of a couple of mediochre swims... Everyone though Kowalski would win gold.... Perkins burst onto the scene at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics... that was the first race he blitzed the field... Atlanta was all the more special though, because I won $50 on a bet I placed with my mate
I think the world record was broken on both occassions... Hacket now has the record, and in my opinion, it's one of the safest world records in Sport... Australia will continue to own the 1500m swim for the next 10 years as well!!!

In grade 9 you won a $50 bet?
i have memories of watching the olympics in both grade 4 (1992) and grade 8 (1996) - so I can't even rely on those to help me remember. Are you sayiong the race I'm thinking of is the one noone thought he'd win - that Daniel Kowalski was supposed to win that one? And it was 1996?
Thorpe - Nick said this was his 3rd Olympics - but that would mean 1996 and he would have been 13 -- I said I think he debued at the Commonwealth games in 1998 - when he was 15 -- but all I can remember was having a big crush on him in and that ebing the only reason I ever watched the Swimming in highschool.

Yeah - Nick doesn't know what he is talking about - he made his debut at the commonwealth games as a 15 year old - he had great expectations placed on him, and he has certainly lived up to those expectations...
And yes - I made and won a $50 bet in year 9!!! I am just stupidly arrogant when it comes to Australia and Australia winning events - in this case, it paid off!!!
Barcelona was 92 - and he was an unknown quantity back then, we knew he would do well, but to break the world record was amazing... 1996 was wehen he SMASHED his own world record against the pundits opinions... it was classic Aussie underdog stuff... even though in my book, he was never the underdog - i had $50 riding on the sucker!!!

I don't know, the 1980 Winter Games still ranks up there for me! But, the games are going great this year!
